Voice & routines

A little less tapping. A little more talking.

Ask for help, hear a reply and turn everyday light or thermostat changes into routines you can review before saving.

Connect your own AI accounts

Hearthlight’s dashboard is free; optional Claude and Deepgram usage is billed by those providers to your own accounts. A Claude chat subscription is separate from Claude API billing.

  1. Create an API key in the Anthropic Console, enable API billing and check your account’s usage limits. Hearthlight uses Claude Sonnet 5 to interpret requests; Home Assistant still executes device commands. Supported routine drafts keep their existing review and confirmation.
  2. Create an API key in the Deepgram Console with speech-to-text access. Deepgram Nova-3 transcribes recordings made with Hold to Talk. Hey Home continues to use your browser’s speech service; spoken replies are unchanged.
  3. Sign in to Hearthlight, open dashboard Settings → Personal AI accounts, paste each key and choose Connect. Keys are checked, encrypted and never shown again. You can replace or remove either connection there.

When connected, Claude receives your request text and Deepgram receives your microphone recording. Their own data policies apply. No private keys are stored in browser storage. A provider failure is shown rather than silently charged to someone else’s account; resolve billing or access with that provider, then reconnect. Removing a connection does not revoke its key — revoke it with the provider if needed.

Hold to talk

Use the dashboard’s Hold to Talk control to speak to your connected Home Assistant assistant.

Allow microphone access when prompted. Speech recognition depends on your browser; text entry is available when speaking is not supported. General answers and device commands depend on your Home Assistant conversation setup.

“Hey Home”

Enable wake listening for the open session and start a request with Hey Home.

Listening is opt-in, not a background smart-speaker service. It pauses when the page is hidden, during manual input and while a reply is playing. Browser speech services may process audio.

Replies you can hear

Assistant responses can play as spoken replies, with a mute control when quiet is better.

Audio playback can depend on browser permissions and a prior tap. Spoken replies require an internet connection; this is not a fully local voice system.

Routines with a final say

Draft supported light on/off or brightness changes and thermostat target settings by voice.

Use a clear routine name, action and optional recurring daily or weekly time. Review the draft and explicitly confirm before saving. Unsupported or ambiguous requests may need rephrasing.

TRY A SUPPORTED REQUEST

“Hey Home, create a routine named Evening to turn off all lights every day at 7 PM.”
  1. 01

    Say your request

Choose connected lights or a thermostat, and a simple daily or weekly time if needed.

  2. 02

    Review the draft

Check the devices, action and schedule in the confirmation panel before saving.

  3. 03

    Let Home Assistant run it

Confirmed routines are stored in Home Assistant. Schedules use that installation’s timezone, not a timer in your browser.

Current routine drafts do not support arbitrary automations, lock actions, one-time dates or sunrise/sunset triggers. Test a saved routine in Home Assistant before relying on it.
